How Eco-Friendly is TRON?

In a world where there’s a new climate disaster reported almost daily, environmental sustainability is of paramount importance. At TRON, we understand this, so we thought we’d shed a little light on how TRON stacks up to other blockchains on the sustainability front.

It takes a substantial amount of electricity to power a blockchain network, a fact which has received criticism in recent years. It should be noted, however, that the amount of electricity it takes to power any given network varies widely. Networks that use a proof-of-work (PoW) model use far more energy than networks that use proof-of-stake (PoS). Bitcoin for instance, uses a proof-of-work model and requires 83,870,000,000 kWh annually in electricity. Until autumn of 2022, Ethereum used a PoW model that consumed 22,370,000,000 kWh. Since adopting a more eco-friendly PoS model, Ethereum’s new estimate for annual consumption is 2,600,000 kWh.

TRON, which uses a consensus proof-of-stake model, only uses 162,867 kWh per year. The average American household uses 10,600 kWh per year. Thus, TRON, now with more than 135 million accounts, powers its global network with approximately the same amount of energy per year as 15 American households.

Carbon emissions from PoS networks tend to be quite low. The TRON network emits about 69.47 tons of carbon annually. For context, that’s about 11 roundtrip flights from San Francisco to Munich. You’ll see from the graph below that TRON’s emissions are on the low end (even measured solely against other PoS networks). Solana’s emissions, on the opposite side of the spectrum, are about 13 times that of the TRON network.

At TRON, we do not believe our duty ends at operating in an energy-efficient manner. We are also striving to build a more eco-friendly, blockchain culture overall.

The TRON Climate Initiative (TCI) is a global coalition of blockchain companies, organizations, and individuals working together to drive our industry toward a more sustainable future. TCI will provide education, support, and grants in favor of companies and projects working to produce a smaller carbon footprint and greener technologies. If you’re committed to eco-friendly, blockchain development, consider joining us, either as an industry partner, an individual, or a startup project focused on sustainable blockchain tech.

So, to answer the question, how eco-friendly is TRON? On August 24, 2022, in a report titled “Energy Efficiency and Carbon Footprint of the TRON Blockchain” released by the Crypto Carbon Ratings Institute (CCRI), TRON was rated as one of the most eco-friendly blockchains.

We’re so mindful of environmental sustainability, that we just might consider changing our brand colors to green. 😉
